Greetings there,
As someone deeply invested in championing LGBTQ+ inclusion, it brings me great pleasure to spotlight two important events in this month's edition of The Inclusion Bites - IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia) and the up-and-coming Pride Month.
IDAHOBIT isn't just a day to me; it's a clarion call for inclusivity that should echo throughout our workplaces daily. Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate and promote LGBTQ+ inclusion, but it's also a reminder that we must do more to make every day a day of inclusion.
Pride is more than just a celebration; it's a protest against the discrimination and hardship the LGBTQ+ community continues to face! As a trans woman, I see every day how people promote this "War on Woke" and am personally impacted by the anti-trans rhetoric that continues to circulate. With our rights being brought into question and kept unequal, the constant struggle to gain access to gender-affirming care, and the way in which we are spoken about, I find it to be completely dehumanizing.
As we celebrate Pride, we must also remember the ongoing fight for equal rights and how we can do more to support our LGBTQ+ colleagues in the workplace. So where do we start? What practical steps can you take?
We can start by adopting a "Zero Tolerance" attitude towards discrimination. It's not enough to disapprove quietly; we must take immediate disciplinary action against offenders. This sends a clear message: discrimination will not be tolerated.
Creating an inclusive culture within our workplaces is equally vital. Inclusion isn't a tick-box exercise; it's about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and accepted. This involves asking people's pronouns, not making assumptions regarding sexual preference or gender, and fostering an environment that promotes sensitive and open discussions surrounding LGBTQ+ topics.
We must also review and improve our policies and procedures to ensure they include all gender identities and sexual preferences. Implementing practices that utilise psychological safety and conscious inclusion will go a long way in making everyone feel valued and included.
Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with many organisations that have brought these practices to life. I've seen firsthand how robust DE&I practices have not only transformed organisational culture but also tangibly boosted employee engagement, productivity, and company revenue. It's a win-win situation.
Pride Month is a chance to celebrate diversity and promote inclusion, but it's also an opportunity to take action. Let's make every day a day of inclusion and protest. As you celebrate Pride, think about how you can make your workplace more inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community.
If you're looking for guidance, please reach out to me. As someone who has worked with many organisations to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion, I can help you make a real difference.
Warm Regards,
